Orchids and Tropical Flowers That Last in Fort Lauderdale Homes and Offices
Written by DGM Flowers Co.
In Fort Lauderdale, flowers live in two climates at once: heat and humidity outside, and cold, dry air conditioning inside. Some flowers struggle with that swing. Orchids and tropical flowers handle it well, which is why we recommend them so often for homes, offices, condos and anyone who wants a gift that lasts.
We're DGM Flowers Co., an independent Fort Lauderdale florist. Our team designs every arrangement in-house and our drivers hand-deliver around Greater Fort Lauderdale.
Why orchids and tropicals hold up
Orchid plants keep blooming. A potted phalaenopsis (moth orchid) is a living plant, not cut flowers. With light care, its blooms can last for weeks, and many people keep the plant going long after.
Tropical flowers are built for this. Bird of paradise, dendrobium orchids and tropical leaves have thick, waxy petals and leaves that are slower to wilt than delicate garden flowers.
They look right here. Bold tropical shapes and colors suit South Florida homes, offices and waterfront condos.

Orchid care in Florida AC
Bright, indirect light. Near a window with filtered light is ideal. Direct afternoon sun through glass can scorch the leaves.
Water sparingly. Water about once a week, when the top inch of mix feels dry, and let it drain fully. If it comes in a decorative planter, lift out the inner pot to water and let it drain fully before putting it back. Never let the roots sit in water. Overwatering is the most common way orchids die.
Keep it off the AC vent. Cold, dry air blowing straight on the plant makes buds drop. A few feet away is fine.
Leave the stakes and clips on until the blooms finish, so the stem stays supported.
Tropical arrangement care
Top up the water every day (tropicals drink a lot), and recut the stems every few days if you can. Keep the arrangement out of direct sun and away from AC vents. Keep the blooms dry, and keep them away from vents and fruit bowls. Our flower care guide has more tips.
Great for offices
Orchids and tropicals are our go-to for reception desks and conference rooms because they stay fresh-looking for longer between deliveries. If you're sending to a business, add the company name and suite number, and order before 2 PM Monday through Friday for same-day delivery. Our same-day delivery guide has the details.
A sweet extra
Add a small box of chocolate truffles ($14.95) at checkout. It's a nice touch with an orchid sent as a thank-you.
Cat owners: lilies are toxic to cats, so keep these out of reach.
